Sheher Bano from Pakistan is studying a Master of Development Studies at the University of Melbourne with the support of an Australia Awards Scholarship.
Sheher was featured as the ‘face’ of the Australia Awards promotions in Pakistan for study commencing in 2026. We recently caught up with her to ask about her Scholarship journey, how it has affected her personal and career growth, and what advice she has for future Scholarship recipients.
Why did you apply for an Australia Awards Scholarship?
I applied for an Australia Awards Scholarship because it aligns perfectly with my aspirations for personal and professional growth. Australia is renowned for its high-quality education system, innovative research opportunities and multicultural learning environment. This Scholarship provided me with a platform to gain knowledge and skills that will enable me to contribute meaningfully to my field, while fostering cross-cultural understanding. The components of leadership and development resonate with my end goals of creating a positive impact in my community by promoting sustainable solutions. I’ve always wanted to dedicate myself to a career that brings out the best in my abilities, and the Australia Awards Scholarship does that. It has not only helped me professionally but has played a part in my personal development as well.
How has your Australia Awards Scholarship contributed to your personal and professional growth?
The Scholarship has contributed positively to my personal and professional goals. Academically, it gave me access to world-class education, equipping me with advanced knowledge and skills in my field as a development practitioner. Professionally, the program’s focus on leadership and development has honed my ability to think critically and address complex challenges, enabling me to take on more strategic roles and contribute meaningfully to my country’s development. On a personal level, the Scholarship experience has been invaluable in broadening my cultural understanding and building a global network of peers. I’ve been able to network with other scholars and peers, exchange ideas, and get a firm grasp of global issues that have aided my professional growth. Through this Scholarship, I have realised how similar the world is. From our fears to our aspirations for a better world, everything is interconnected. It’s been a transformative journey so far.

University aside, what has your life in Australia been like?
Outside of the university environment, I really got to understand the Australian culture through interactions with the First Nations peoples and the rich indigenous history that Australia has. Alongside this, I have interacted with peers from various other countries and regions, adding to my own cultural knowledge and sensitivity. I’ve loved the opportunity to travel around Australia and enjoy the beautiful landscapes, experiences and food.
What do you hope to do upon returning to Pakistan?
Once I return to my home country, I hope to apply the knowledge, skills and experiences I gained through the Australia Awards Scholarship to drive meaningful change in my field. My primary goal is to contribute to the development sector, specifically on issues of refugee and migrant protection, addressing critical challenges and creating sustainable, impactful solutions. I also plan to expand my work within the realm of climate change and address issues pertaining to this problem. I aim to collaborate with local stakeholders, government agencies and community organisations to implement projects that foster development and align with national priorities. Additionally, I plan to initiate my own non-profit organisation working on climate change and refugees, two areas that I believe are going to be issues of heightened concern in the coming years.

What advice would you give to future Scholarship recipients?
I would advise them to make the most of their experiences and step outside academic study to really understand the culture and traditions of Australia. It has a rich history that can aid one’s own learning. Immerse yourselves in extracurricular activities, participate in conferences and network as much as you can. This is a life-changing experience, and the goal should be to get the most out of it. Engage with people from different backgrounds and learn about their perspectives. This will enrich your understanding of global issues and strengthen your cross-cultural communication skills.
